Health is Wealth
Everybody knows the famous saying “Health is Wealth” and for today’s culture, you either prioritize it or die trying. According to the Heart Foundation, cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major cause of death in Australia and attributed to 45,053 in 2014 likely resulting to an Australian dying every 12 minutes.
I am worried of having a heart, stroke, or blood vessel disease which is why I am making sure I check what I eat and what I do. I currently don’t have any issues with my blood pressure or cholesterol levels but I thought of my parents and how old age could affect their cardiovascular health.
There are many risk factors involved for one to get a CVD and I believe my parents has a few of them. One is high blood pressure, being overweight and obese, and physical inactivity due to old age. Here is a PDF copy of the Australian Heart Disease Statistics of 2014.
Blood Pressure Monitor
One thing you can do to help monitor your cardiovascular health is with your blood pressure. Unfortunately, not everybody knows how to take a blood pressure and especially for older people who live on their own it is especially hard. You can’t take a blood pressure on your own using a manual blood pressure cuff and you would also need someone who has had training like a nurse or anybody in the practice of health services.
That’s where the automatic blood pressure monitors come in. Whether you’re alone or you’re with somebody else who also doesn’t know how to take blood pressures. I was just in Costco today and saw this blood pressure monitor – The OMRON Automatic Blood Pressure Monitor.
There are other brands out there but this is the only one I’ve got. OMRON Automatic Blood Pressure Monitor is a product of OMRON HEALTHCARE Co., Ltd., Japan. The core component for OMRON blood pressure monitors, which is the Pressure Sensor, is produced in Japan.

How does it work?
It’s very easy to use an automatic blood pressure monitor. You just need to put the arm cuff around your preferred arm and make sure that it is neither too tight or loose. The OMRON automatic blood pressure monitor has an indicator to tell you whether the cuff is too tight or loose. If it is perfectly fit around the arm, the symbol “OK” will be visible. Once the cuff is wrapped around the arm, you just need to press the start button on the device. Be ready though as the cuff will inflate really tight for a few seconds. All you have to do now is wait for the reading to appear.
A blood pressure reading under 120/80mmHg is considered optimal. Readings over 120/80mmHg and up to 139/89mmHg are in the normal to high normal range. To learn more about managing your blood pressure, download and read this PDF from Heart Foundation Australia.
We often take things for granted and managing our blood pressure is one of them. Heart attack is sometimes considered the silent killer as you’ll never know when it will hit especially if you’re not aware you have a cardiovascular disease.
Always make sure to eat healthy and exercise regularly. I know you’ve heard this advice a million times but that’s really it. There is no better cure to any disease than prevention. If you know anybody in your family, especially your parents, who have high blood pressure – it is most likely that you will have problems with it yourself.
Using an automatic blood pressure monitor is only one way of managing your blood pressure but it is easy and convenient to use. No need to call for somebody who knows how to take a manual blood pressure reading. Just insert the cuff into your arm, press start to inflate the cuff and wait for the reading in just a few seconds.
There are other automatic blood pressure monitors out there that are more advanced and can connect to your smart phone and record all your results but the OMRON HEM-7270 is cheap and can do the job as well.
